Grüss Gott, mit hellen Klang The Adelaider Liedertafel 1858 is a men's choir singing mainly German songs at various community gatherings and festive days in Adelaide, throughout the Adelaide Metropolitan area, country South Australia and beyond. We are headquartered at the South Australian German Association (SAADV). Our conductor is Jonathan Bligh, and at full strength we number 44. We believe we are the oldest continuing male choir, and the second-oldest choir of any type (we believe there is a mixed choir in Victoria that was founded in 1856 and is still active), in Australia. anyone can produce evidence to the contrary we will gladly amend our claim. Our origins date back to 1844, only 8 years after the colony of South Australia was established by Governor Hindmarsh, but it was in 1858 that a committee established the choir which still exists today. You can browse our history pages for more detailed information. We perform mainly German operatic works and folksongs, but also have Australian, English, Welsh and American choral works in our repertoire. ALT1858 is always keen to recruit new male singers, particularly first and second tenors. Whilst proficiency in the German language is obviously an advantage, it is not a prerequisite. If necessary, we will teach you to pronounce (as distinct from speak) German. In fact, the only thing you must have is a love of singing! We practice every Tuesday evening (except for a short recess over Christmas and New Year) at 7:30pm at the SAADV clubrooms, 223 Flinders Street, Adelaide SA. If you can hold a tune and enjoy singing, contact us, or simply turn up on Tuesday evening!
